Nature protection and industry – does this go together?
A question to which LÜDECKE and the the Bavarian Regional Association for Bird Protection (LBV) found an impressive answer on the “International Day of Biodiversity”.
A conflict-laden Topic
When companies are planning new warehouses or production sites and environmentalists discover endangered species on these areas, this often gives rise to severe conflicts. The companies have an urgent need for new facilities to increase their efficiency, save energy and secure future operation and workplaces. On the other hand, there are the environmentalists who emphasise the priceless value of biodiversity. As it is biodiversity that supplies us with essential resources such as oxygen, clean water and fertile soil.
LÜDECKE’s pioneering role
The situation is completely different at LÜDECKE in Amberg. The family company has made environmental protection and preserving habitats at their factory site in the southern industrial area their priority.
To show what can be done for the important interaction between ecosystems, LÜDECKE opened its doors on the occasion of the international day for biodiversity. Together with the regional LBV group, they explained their strategies and actions to more than 40 interested guests. During the subsequent tour of the premises, the visitors could build their own opinion.
A green oasis in the industrial area
The park which has a size of 6,482 square metres covered with wildflower meadows, fruit trees, bee colonies, ponds, deadwood and rock piles as well as with old trees and which has been named a biotope, offers a true green oasis for employees, seminar guests and interested visitors. On the recently set up wild fruit hedge training trail you can get to know regional wild fruits more closely. QR codes provide information on the importance of wood for the local fauna and us humans due to their healthy components. This information is complemented by wild fruit recipes.
On the 2,800 square metre large roof area which has been used extensively over the last years, you can admire the blossoming of the stone garden’s plants. In addition to this, the company proudly presented its new raised beds which supply the company’s own canteen with vegetables, salad and herbs. Regional, organic and seasonal straight from the rooftop – you can taste it! The roof area is an impressive place for recreation which especially over summertime offers the employees a wonderful view over their hometown Amberg when having a lunch break.
Flora and Fauna in Harmony
At the backside of the newly constructed building, 16 nest boxes have been installed just in time for the breeding season of the swallow. Now, the company is hoping that the boxes will be accepted and soon be inhabited. The synergy between flora and fauna is essential for our prosperity. LÜDECKE has realized this for a long time and by preserving these habitats wants to raise the awareness of as many people as possible. What a company can realise, can also be done in private gardens. There are already too many concrete and stone desserts.
